Mythological history:

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas among the sacred pilgrimage places of Hindus. This temple is the original place of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, situated on the western bank of the sacred river Ganga for many thousands of years. The main deity of the temple is known as Shri Vishwanath or Visheshwar, which means Lord of the Universe. It is believed that by taking a bath in the holy river Ganga here and having darshan of Kashi Vishwanath ji one attains salvation. This temple is the original place of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. According to religious beliefs, this temple of Baba Vishwanath has been present here for ages and has been mentioned in mythological Vedas like Mahabharata.

After the marriage, when Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati went for Gagan Vihar, Mother Sati while doing the Vihar, asked Lord Shiva to create Anand Van, which would be different and supernatural from the creation of Lord Brahma, where she could live with Lord Shiva. To live in solitude, Mahadev ji creates a five-kosh long and wide Anand-Kanand forest in the sky to fulfill the wish of Mother Sati. Which was a very supernatural and beautiful forest, where Mother Sati attained ecstasy. She told Lord Shiva that this ecstasy should be attained by all those who want to get freedom from sorrows. Lord Shiva says Mother, you are the best in the world. Since you are a mother, it is natural for you to have feelings of public welfare in your mind. I will fulfill this wish of yours. Then Lord Shiva made Kashi the main place for attaining salvation and ecstasy and the same Shiva started residing in Kashi with Mother Sati.It is said that it does not disappear even during the Doomsday. At that time Lord Shankar holds it on his trident and takes it down when the time of creation comes. Not only this, this land is also said to be the place of the original creation. At this very place, Lord Vishnu pleased Ashutosh by doing penance with the desire to create the universe and then when he slept, Brahma was born from his navel-lotus, who created the entire world. Agastya Muni had also worshiped Lord Vishveshwar a lot and by his worship, Shri Vashishthaji had attained salvation in all three worlds.

It was renovated by King Harishchandra in the 11th century and was demolished by Muhammad Gauri in 1194. Which was rebuilt once again but in 1447 it was again demolished by Sultan Mahmood Shah of Jaunpur.
