The name of Shri Ram is written with sandalwood on the Bel Patra that is offered on the Shivalinga of Markandeya Mahadev Temple, which is obtained by the pundits at the entrance of the temple. It is believed that on the second day of 'Mahashivratri', the wish of having a son is fulfilled by offering Bel Patra written in the name of Shri Ram.

It is believed that once someone sarcastically insulted the childless sage Mrikand and his wife Marandhati by saying that without a son their lineage would not be able to grow, so they did penance to Lord Brahma before wishing for a child, due to which Lord Brahma was pleased and told That only Lord Shiva could change his fate, then he did hard penance of Mahadev and got the boon of having a son from him, but Lord Shiva also said that his son would live only for 12 years. After this, they had a child named Markandeya. After a few years, when Markandeya came to know about his short life, he started doing penance for the same Mahadev with whose blessings he was born. Then Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance and granted him a long life and after completing 12 years of age, Yamraj had to return without taking his life.
