Mythological History:

By visiting Mahakaleshwar Mahadev Temple and worshiping Lord Shiva, God becomes extremely happy and bestows blessings of happiness, prosperity, and wealth. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is the most unique Jyotirlinga, which people come from all over the country and abroad to worship and visit and get the blessings of Lord Shiva and the boon of the fulfillment of their wishes. Mahakaleshwar Mahadev represents a revered form of Lord Shiva, hence it is considered very important to get the blessings of Mahakal to remove sorrow, and suffering from life and move towards spirituality.

Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. Mahakal Temple is located in Ujjain of Madhya Pradesh state, which is a famous temple. The idol of Omkareshwar Shiva is installed in the sanctum sanctorum above the Mahakal temple. Images of Ganesha, Parvati, and Kartikeya are installed in the west, north, and east of the sanctum. There is a statue of Nandi in the south. The idol of Nagchandreshwar on the third floor is open for darshan only on the day of Nagpanchami. On the day of Mahashivratri, a huge fair is held near the temple, and puja takes place at night. Due to being self-made, grand, and south-facing, Mahakaleshwar Mahadev has extremely virtuous significance. It is believed that just by seeing it one attains salvation. According to Puranic stories, Mahakaleshwar is considered the king of Ujjain. It is believed that no king can stay in Ujjain at night, he will die. It is crowded with devotees every day. But there is a huge crowd of devotees in Sawan. All wishes are fulfilled just by visiting here. Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva is performed every Monday.

History shows that Ujjain was ruled by the Yavanas from 1107 to 1728 AD. During his reign, the ancient religious traditions of Hindus established in Avanti for about 4500 years were almost destroyed. But in 1690 AD, the Marathas attacked the Malwa region and on 29 November 1728, the Maratha rulers established their supremacy in the Malwa region. After this, the lost glory of Ujjain returned and from 1731 to 1809 this city remained the capital of Malwa. Two important events took place here during the reign of Marathas - first, the reconstruction of the Mahakaleshwar temple the re-establishment of Jyotirlinga, and the establishment of the Simhastha festival bath. Which was a huge achievement. Later, Raja Bhoj expanded this temple.

It is believed that whoever visits Mahakaleshwar ji, attains salvation, and gets freedom from all worldly obstacles, the mind becomes concentrated and the person automatically moves on the right path. Here, Bhasma Aarti of Lord Shiva is performed and from time to time Lord Shiva is beautifully decorated. Here a complete description of the life of Lord Shiva is given, for which a corridor has been built that looks attractive at night. There is a huge crowd in this temple every Monday during Mahashivratri and Shravan month. There is a small water source adjacent to the temple which is called Kotitirtha. It is believed that when Iltutmish demolished the temple, he had thrown the Shivalinga in this Kotitirtha. Recently its 118 peaks have been coated with 16 kg of gold.

South-facing Jyotirlinga is Mahakal: Mahakal temple situated in Ujjain also has mythological importance. There is a belief about this temple that Lord Shiva had protected his devotees by killing a demon named Dushan here, after which Bhole Baba resided here after the request of the devotees. This temple is the third Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Its special thing is that it is the only Jyotirlinga which faces south. This is the reason why it is considered very important from the point of view of Tantra Sadhana, because for Tantra Sadhana it is necessary to be south-facing. There is also a belief about this temple that Lord Shiva himself appeared here. Also, it is said in the Puranas that Ujjain was founded by Brahmaji himself. It is also believed that salvation is attained only by seeing Mahakaal.

Devotees can participate in various rituals, such as aarti in the morning, midday, and evening. Furthermore, unlike other temples, which close for lunch in the afternoon, there is no afternoon break in between. Here Bhashma Aarti is performed from 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM and after that morning Aarti is performed from 07:00 AM to 07:30 AM.
