Mythological History:

Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and an ancient city of India. However, the evidence of this city obtained through excavation is from the Kushan period. According to mythology, the capital of Shursena country was here. In mythological literature, Mathura has been addressed by many names like - Shursen Nagari, Madhupuri, Madhunagari, Madhura etc. That part of India which lies between the Himalayas and Vindhyachal, was called Aryavarta in ancient times. It is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.

In Valmiki Ramayana, Mathura has been called Madhupur, or the city of Madhudanava, and is described as the capital of Lavanasura. In this context, this city has been described as inhabited by Madhudaitya. Lavanasura, whom Shatrughan defeated and killed in the war, was the son of this Madhudanava. This indicates that Madhupuri or Mathura was established during the Ramayana period. Ramayana describes the prosperity of this city. This city was also decorated by Lavanasura.
